Dear Flora,

I had given up ever hearing from you when your letter came. I hope you don’t have to work hard.

I read about Clara in the paper and was horrified to learn that she was charged with such a horrid crime, if she did do it.

I read in the papers that you passed as her daughter. Did you call her your mother?

Oh Flora. It made me so angry when I read that. She is not your mother; surely my aunt told you that.

Dear Flora, I pity you, being so young and alone. Pray to God, Flora, and ask His help to keep you from evil. Try to do what is right and you will get through. You may have a good, happy home yet if you are careful and good.

Now dear, as to that money; if you have any, keep it yourself and put it to good use. Mother and Alix and all are well. Try to do what good you can, and be sure you do not get into bad company, as you will soon be a woman now. I should like it if you would continue to be a good girl and have luck and do well. May God bless you and keep you from all the evil and temptation of the city.

Now I will close for this time, and don’t do as you did before, but write and tell us everything you can. I will look for a long letter and full particulars.

Now I shall say good-bye. May God bless pray and guide you in the path of truth and righteousness.

From your friend, Eliza B Matheson
